Potlatch History The community of Potlatch began as a company town for Potlatch Forest, Inc., once boasting the world's largest White Pine sawmill in the United States (1906) with a booming forest industry. The City of Potlatch has a population of over 800 people. The City is located one mile off of Highway 95 on State Highway 6 (aka Scenic 6) and is 18 miles NE of Moscow and 51 miles NE of Lewiston. Potlatch offers two walking tours for history buffs: "A Walking Tour of the Potlatch Commercial District" and "A Walking Tour of Potlatch Neighborhoods". Pick up your free tour guide document at City Hall or at the WIMHPG railroad depot. These publications are provided by the Potlatch Historical Society and the City of Potlatch. A brochure, "The Palouse Country", which offers directions for driving tours of Latah and Whitman Counties, is also available at City Hall or at the WIMHPG railroad depot. WI&M Depot By 1905, the Potlatch Lumber Company owned 100,000 acres of timber in Idaho’s white pine belt, the largest remaining stand of virgin white pine timber in the world. Potlatch Union Church Dedicated in 1912. When it was built it was the largest church in Latah County and could seat approximately 1000 people. The church burned to the ground July 15, 1951. Potlatch Mercantile The cornerstone of the Potlatch Mercantile Company Store is dated 1906 and it was a major economic force in Latah County, until it burned down on January 13, 1963.
